Retro - Ten Years Of SBS Television:  SBS, 8.30pm

A one-hour special, Retro - Ten Years Of SBS Television, screens Wednesday at 8.30pm, and is in effect a gentle self-pat on the back.

There will be major highlights from the decade past, including some old favourites - particularly those shows that either broke new ground, won critical acclaim, or clearly showed the aims, identity and direction of Australia's "special" network.

Among the noted Australians who praise SBS are former PM Malcolm Fraser, TV pioneer Bruce Gyngell, who was there at the beginning to see its birth, SBS Chief Executive, Brian Johns, and the Minister for Communications, Kim Beazley
